Pope Francis has arrived in the Chilean capital amid protests against sexual abuse scandals in the Catholic Church. Protesters denounced the visit by hanging a protest banner across an overhang road sign in Santiago. Police in riot gear arrested the protesters after emergency workers brought them down. Chileans are furious over the 20-15 appointment of a bishop close to Reverend Fernando Karadima, who the Vatican found guilty in historic abuse cases of minors. Protesters demanded the pope to take action against both abusers and anyone who helped cover up their actions. The pontiff is expected to highlight the plight of indigenous people and underscore the need to preserve the Amazon on his 3-day trip.
