Hundreds of snowbound vehicles rescued from Spanish highway
Members of Spain's Military Emergency Unit (UME) battled snow and bad weather on Sunday (January 7) to free hundreds of vehicles which had spent the night stuck on a snow covered highway between Madrid and the town of Segovia. Heavy snowfall on Saturday night (January 6) blocked the AP-6 highway, causing a 70km traffic jam and leaving hundreds of people stranded in their cars overnight. Footage released by the UME on Sunday showed members of the unit working to free stranded vehicles while snowploughs cleared the highway. At 1330 local time (1230gmt) the head of Spain's Traffic General Direction Gregorio Serrano said on Twitter that the highway had been cleared and no more vehicles were stuck.
