New austerity measures spark angry protests in Athens

Clashes have erupted between protesters and police outside the Greek Parliament after lawmakers voted to approve more painful austerity measures. Demonstrators threw rocks, molotov cocktails and flares at the police forces. They also sprayed the police with red paint. The police used pepper spray to disperse the crowd on the steps of the parliament building. No arrests or injuries were reported. Earlier, thousands of people marched in anti-government rallies in the capital Athens and the second largest city of Thessaloniki. They were voicing anger over measures that include tougher conditions for unions to call strikes, speedier property foreclosures, and cuts in family benefits. The new austerity measures were demanded by Greece’s international lenders to receive further bailout funds.
