Papua New Guinea: Dormant Kadovar Island volcano erupts, prompting evacuations
The Kadovar Island volcano spewed smoke and ash, Sunday, after awakening for the first time in centuries. More than 500 people were evacuated as a result. The volcano was thought to be dormant; the last-known eruption was recorded in the 17th century. According to reports, the clouds of ash and smoke rose just above 2,000 metres (6,561 feet).
