Russia, Iran, Turkey begin Syria talks in Sochi
A fresh round of Syria peace talks has just begun in the Russian Black Sea resort of Sochi with the Arab country’s future topping the agenda. The conference which will continue until Tuesday has been brokered by Turkey, Russia and Iran. UN Special Envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, is also in attendance. According to Russia’s envoy Alexander Lavrientiev, the conference is calling on Syrian people to decide their fate through a vote without any external pressure. He hopes that the talks will lead to a draft constitution for Syria which would be handed to de Mistura for further implementation. That’s despite a boycott of the talks by some foreign-backed opposition groups and Kurdish factions. Russia has said their absence is unlikely to be a setback for the peace talks.
