Spain warns Catalan leader against governing from exile
Spain says it will continue to run Catalonia's government if the region’s sacked former leader Carles Puigdemont is elected as president while in self-imposed exile in Brussels. The new Catalan parliament is to hold its maiden session on January 17th. The move would be the first step toward reinstating the local government after Madrid fired the old regional administration for holding a banned referendum and declaring independence unilaterally. Puigdemont could face immediate arrest upon returning to Catalonia for the same reason. He says he will give a mandatory speech at the parliament, via video conference or a representative on the election date. The pro-secession politician’s party won most votes in the December 21 regional election amongst the separatist parties. Puigdemont supporters argue that voters have elected him and he should be able to rule from Brussels given the current circumstances.
