Syrian regime steps up offensive on Idlib
Government forces in Syria are stepping up their offensive against opposition fighters in their largest remaining stronghold. Idlib is supposed to be a 'de-escalation zone' - set up last year with the backing of Russia, Iran and Turkey. But the deal appears to have crumbled: President Bashar al-Assad - backed by Russia - is bent on regaining control of the area, to cement his grip on power. For civilians, the onslaught is causing misery in freezing winter conditions.
